چکیده

1. INTRODUCTION † The primary cause of national airspace delay is convective weather. A large fraction of these delays is due specifically to en route weather (Allen et al., 2001). Crowded travel corridors such as the Great Lakes corridor from Chicago to New York experience the most significant en route convective weather delays. It is of particular importance within these high traffic regions that traffic managers have access to the most accurate and realistic en route weather depiction products in order to minimize convective weather delays while ensuring safety.

Improving Weather Radar Data Quality for Aviation Weather Needs*

A fundamental function of any aviation weather system is to provide accurate and timely weather information tailored to the specific air traffic situations for which a system is designed. Weather location and intensity are of prime importance to such systems. Knowledge of the weather provides “nowcasting” functionality in the terminal and en route air spaces. It also is used as input into aviat...

Corridor Integrated Weather System

n Flight delays are now a major problem in the U.S. National Airspace System. A significant fraction of these delays are caused by reductions in en route capacity due to severe convective weather. The Corridor Integrated Weather System (CIWS) is a fully automated weather analysis and forecasting system designed to support the development and execution of convective weather impact mitigation pla...

Evaluation of Enroute Convective Weather Avoidance Models Based on Planned and Observed Flight*

The effective management of convective weather in congested airspace requires decision support tools that can translate weather information available to air traffic managers into anticipated impact on air traffic operations. The Convective Weather Avoidance Model (CWAM) has been under development at Lincoln Lab under sponsorship of NASA to develop a correlation between pilot behavior and observ...

Assessment and Interpretation of En Route Weather Avoidance Fields from the Convective Weather Avoidance Model

This paper presents the results of a study to quantify the performance of Weather Avoidance Fields in predicting the operational impact of convective weather on en route airspace. The Convective Weather Avoidance Model identifies regions of convective weather that pilots are likely to avoid based upon an examination of the planned and actual flight trajectories in regions of weather impact. Fro...
